Welcome to NAPANc’s New Website! PDF Print E-mail

The National Association of PeriAnesthesia Nurses of Canada (NAPANc) was formed in 2002 by a group of like-minded individuals, perianesthesia nurses from across Canada, each with their own provincial associations. The intent of this alignment was to increase networking of knowledge, skills and strength of their specialty in order to improve patient care and to increase recognition of our area of specialty.

NAPANc is comprised of associations from across 10 provinces and 3 territories of Canada (click on the flags to your left to learn more about each province or territory: by holding your cursor over the flag, the name of the province that each flag represents will appear).  The task of organizing an association across this large continent can be a daunting one, but over time and with perseverance and tenacity, this specialty association finally came to fruition and has now reached international recognition.

Modern technology has enhanced this possibility, as the Association is now purely web based for its members and through electronic mail and telephone calls, the Volunteers of NAPANc are able to meet and plan.

NAPAN in Cree means “Eyes Open”, and thus the quarterly newsletter has been named, the “Eye Opener”.   The NAPANc logo reflects this theme with the red maple leaf inside the large “C” resembling the pupil of an eye.

This website will evolve over time, as new and current information in the field of PeriAnesthesia Nursing becomes available and necessary for our work. So keep your eyes on NAPANc and on this website!  And watch what NAPANc is doing for you now!

In closing, we would like to thank the Founding Members of NAPANc for their foresight and passion for creating the National Association of PeriAnesthesia Nurses of Canada (please see "Founding Members" under "About NAPANc").

" There is no magic in the word association.  We must never forget that the individual makes the association.  What the association depends on are its members.  A nurse's association can never substitute for the individual nurse." - Florence Nightingale

SPOTLIGHT ON: Joan Toms, Past President PDF Print E-mail

altJoan Toms:

As a dedicated, tireless, goal-oriented RN for 33 years,  Joan's colleagues from the National Association of PeriAnesthesia Nurses Association of Canada nominated Joan for the Canadian Association of Nurses "Centennial Award" in 2008.  The CNA accepted this nomination and Joan Toms was named one of CNA's 100 winners of this prestigious award.

Joan's colleagues describe Joan as "an exemplary role model with an excellent work ethic" that has made a positive impact on the PeriAnesthesia Nursing profession in Manitoba and in Canada.

Since 1985, Joan has relentlessly promoted and advanced perianesthesia nursing as a specialized practice in her Health Region, and as an Executive Member and President of the Manitoba Association of PeriAnesthesia Nurses.  In 1998 in Winnipeg, she organized an independent meeting of Canadian colleagues who formed a Steering Committee for the future "National Association of PeriAnesthesia Nurses of Canada".

As a Charter Member in 2002, President of NAPANc from 2005-7, member of the Standards Committee, 2002-present and currently the Nominations Committee Chair, Joan has continuously made significant contributions to NAPANc.

In 1998, she received the Manitoba Association of PeriAnesthesia Nurses Recognition Award. In 2007, Joan’s peers awarded her the Clinical Nursing Excellence Award at Grace Hospital.

Congratulations, Joan for representing Canadian PeriAnesthesia Nurses so well!
