The National Association of PeriAnesthesia Nurses of Canada (NAPANĀ©) is pleased to announce the launch of the Second Edition of the Standards for Practice
in October, 2011 The Standards are a comprehensive collection of
standards based on competencies as per the Canadian Nurses Association's
standards and focus on Accreditation Canada's Model as the framework
for this version.
Highlights of the Standards include:
- Evidence-based Standards of PeriAnesthesia Nursing Practice
- A framework of PeriAnesthesia Nursing Practice which includes the PeriAnesthesia Nursing Paradigm
The 15 Standards include:
Assessment, Nursing Diagnosis, Planning, Implementation, Evaluation,
Professional Responsibility and Accountability, Continuing Competence,
Ethics, The Canadian Legal System, Research, Leadership, Collaboration,
Quality Management, Risk Management and Quality Improvement, Quality
Human Resource Utilization, Quality Professional Practice Environment.

- Functions of the PeriAnesthesia Environment: Physical Facilities, Equipment
- Functions of the PeriAnesthesia Environment: Minimum Staffing and Patient Classification

The National Association of PeriAnesthesia Nurses of
Canada's Second Edition of the "Standards for Practice" are currently
available in English. French translation of this set of Standards for Practice is currently underway.

The Standards for Practice are not static, but are subject to constant revision as practices and knowledge change through research. The Standards Committee is working diligently on an ongoing basis to update and revise these standards to ensure that the most current information is available and gold standard patient care can be delivered by all nurses in this area of specialty.

If you ascertain that your institution's policies differ at all from the Standards for Practice, please note that these policies take precedence over the Standards and must be adhered to first. Provincial standards also supersede the National Standards for Practice. International Standards do not supersede the Canadian standards for practice.
