The National Association of PeriAnesthesia Nurses of Canada Standards Committee was formally established at the NAPANc board meeting in May 2004.
Informally, work had already commenced on "Standards" to describe the role of the PeriAnesthesia nurse and the PeriAnesthesia environment. A working group was organized during the NAPANc National Conference in May 2003 in Richmond, B.C., where data were collected from PeriAnesthesia nurses regarding PeriAnesthesia nursing competencies and the PeriAnesthesia environment and included populations of clients to whom services were provided.
The Standards Committee began with reviewing the Canadian Nurses Association's 2002 document, "Achieving Excellence in Professional Practice: A Guide to Developing and Revising Standards". This document has become the guide for the development of the Standards for Practice, the supporting Resources, and the Mission Statement. Since 2005, the NAPANc Standards Committee has obtained surveys from members at the NAPANc Annual National Conferences. The survey information was used to obtain information from members regarding areas of interest related to PeriAnesthesia Nursing. This information has been instrumental in identifying members' needs, which we have prioritized in the four Resources.
The NAPANc Standards Committee is diverse and membership includes representation from the following:
1) Populations: adult and pediatrics
2) Nursing classifications: general duty, educators, administration
3) Environments: Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Day Surgery, Preoperative Admission Clinic, Regional Anesthesia room and Same Day Surgery
The NAPANc Standards Committee gave generously of their time and were dedicated to the association and perianesthesia nursing. The commitment, dedication and friendship of this group of PeriAnesthesia nurses has allowed for the success of the NAPANc Standards Committee and the First Edition of the NAPANc Standards for Practice.
